March 28 – July 8
One of the most hilarious musical productions ever written for the stage is just as funny, and every bit as entertaining as it was when it first opened in 1879.
PIRATES OF PENZANCE, the fifth and without a doubt the most well known and well loved of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, centers around Frederic, a young man who is about to finish his apprenticeship to a band of harmless pirates. It was intended that he be apprenticed as a “pilot,” but his nurse, when sent to make the arrangements, mistook “pilot” for “pirate.” After leaving the pirates, he encounters Mabel, a beautiful maiden, on the beach and falls in love. Her sisters arrive as do the pirates, who claim the girls as their brides. In comes the girls’ father, an inept major-general, who convinces the pirates that he is a orphan, and playing upon their sympathy, as they are also all orphans, convinces them to release everyone.
Fredric vows to get rid of the pirates, but is reminded by the pirate king that his apprenticeship was to continue until his 21st birthday, which, since he was born on February 29 and thus has one birthday every four years, will continue for 63 years! A brilliant combination of zany slapstick and sophisticated wit, coupled with a timeless score, gives us a show that will be thoroughly enjoyed by ANY audience.
