A rainbow ride through biblical Egypt, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is an amazing, uplifting event. Travel along with Andrew Lloyd Webber's ("Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera") uplifting music and the humor and poetry of lyricist Tim Rice (Oscar-winning lyricist of Disney's "Alladin") on a biblical joyride!
This blockbuster musical combines pop, country, rock and other styles for a multi-textured palette of sound. Originally written as a fifteen minute pop-cantata for a children's choir, this biblical musical has become one of America's favorite shows. Critic Michael Sommers (Newhouse Newspapers) says that "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is "bright, it's fun to hear, it's music you can't help whistling as you roll out of the theater."
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" tells the story of favorite son Joseph, who is sold into slavery by his 11 jealous brothers when their father, Jacob, gives him a fabulous coat of many colors. He is resold to the wealthy Potiphar, whose wife fails to seduce Joseph and has him thrown into jail.
Because of his power to interpret dream -- and to predict Egypt's seven fat years and seven lean years -- he becomes the Pharaoh's right hand man. At the conclusion of this kaleidoscope of song and dance, Joseph reunites with his family and forgives his brothers.
Shortly after writing "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" the Webber-Rice team hit a home run with the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." Their success continues in the late 70's when "Evita" won seven Tony Awards. Then, following on the tail of "Cats" Webber produced the roller-skate spectacle, "Starlight Express." Another recent blockbuster musical to his credit is "Phantom of the Opera.".
